County Habitat is affiliated with Habitat for Humanity International
(HFHI), the parent organization of all affiliates worldwide. Just
like the affiliate, HFHI is an ecumenical Christian housing ministry
that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the
world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.
The organization has been building simple, decent, and affordable
housing since 1976 when it was founded by Millard and Linda Fuller.
Since then 300,000 homes have been built, providing shelter for over
1,000,000 people worldwide.
HFHI acts as a support and resource for affiliates worldwide of
which Houston County Habitat is one. The affiliates are in covenant
with HFHI to build simple, decent, affordable houses in keeping with
the foundational Christian principles of the organization. As far
as day to day operations go each affiliate has complete control over
its operations from resource development to site selection to family
services to homebuilding.
The relationship between our affiliate and Habitat International
has many benefits. HFHI provides the affiliate with numerous
instances of support and training. HFHI has an ongoing conference
call training program that allows for Habitat affiliates to gain
more knowledge about how to better serve the community they are
operating in. Topics range from resource development to family
services. In addition, HFHI has worked hard to secure many
donations of in-kind materials from corporations like Whirlpool,
Yale, and Valspar, etc. for every home built throughout the country.
